Building Packaging
The process of protecting the building from outside threats, such as inclement weather, theft, vandalism, or trespassing.

Compartmentalization
The systematic venting of a structure by controlling which windows and doors are opened at any given time.

Direct Loss
A loss caused directly by a fire; can be either primary damage or secondary damage.

HVAC System
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system within a building and the equipment necessary to make it function; usually a single, integrated unit with a complex system of ducts throughout the building.

IAP
(Incident Action Plan)-Strategic goals, tactical objectives, and support requirements for the incident.

Indirect Loss
A loss indirectly associated with a fire.

Internal Resources
Those resources immediately available for fire department use without special arrangements.  Includes equipment, personnel, capabilities, and supplies.

Loss Control
The practice of minimizing damage and providing customer service through effective mitigation and recovery efforts before, during, and after an incident.

Loss Control Factors
The factors that are useful in risk evaluation and that are the conditions unique to a particular scenario or location.

Loss Control Risk
A potential loss, direct or indirect, during an emergency event.

Loss Control Risk Analysis
The process in which specific potential risks are identified and evaluated and where the goal of the process is to develop strategies to minimize the impact of these risks.

Loss Control Strategies
The actions that reduce or eliminate all or part of a loss control risk.

Overhaul
Those operations for searching for and extinguishing hidden or remaining fires once the main body of the fire has been extinguished.

Post-Incident Loss Control Activities
Those preparations needed in order to turn the property back to the owner or occupant.

Pre-Incident Plan
Document containing set procedures for possible incidents at a given location developed during pre-incident planning.  Synonymous with Preplan.

Pre-Incident Planning
Act of preparing to handle an incident at a particular location or of a particular type of incident before an incident occurs.  Synonymous with Prefire Planning, Preplanning, Prefire Inspection, or Pre-Incident Inspection.

Preplan
Document containing set procedures for possible incidents at a given location developed during pre-incident planning.  Synonymous with Pre-Incident Plan.

Primary Damage
Damage caused by the fire itself and not by actions taken to fight the fire.

Risk Evaluation
Determining the risk level or seriousness of a risk.

Risk Identification
Stage of loss control risk analysis where planners identify risks, in addition to common risks, that are specific to a certain facility, occupancy, or area.

Risk Level
The seriousness of a risk, which is determined by considering how often it may occur and how bad it is when it occurs.  Frequency and Severity.

Salvage
Those methods and operating procedures associated with fire fighting that aid in reducing primary and secondary damage during fire fighting operations.

Secondary Damage
Damage caused by or resulting from those actions taken to fight a fire and leaving the property unprotected.

Size-Up
The mental process of considering all available factors that affect the incident during the course of the operation.

Value at Risk
One of several loss control factors considered when planning loss control strategies; a subjective determination of the value of a structure, its contents, the operations associated with it, or its existence.
